On November 8, 2019, the Northeast Asian Research Center, the Northeast Asian Studies College, and Korea Institute for National Unification jointly organized an international academic conference on the theme of “Belt and Road and the Korean Peninsula: Prospects and Promotion Paths for Cooperation”. More than 20 scholars including seven scholars from Korea Institute for National Unification lead by President Lin Gangze and Vice President Tian Bingkun, and scholars from Jilin University, Shandong University, Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences, Eastern Liaoning University and Dalian University of Foreign Languages attended the meeting.

    Before the meeting, Party Secretary of Jilin University Yang Zhenbin met with President Lin Gangze and his delegation. Dean of the Northeast Asian Studies College Prof. Yu Xiao, Deputy Director of the Northeast Asian Research Center and Director of the Korean Institute of Korea Professor Zhang Huizhi attended the meeting. Vice President Zhao Hongwei and the relevant persons in charge of the Global Engagement Office and the Social Science Division attended the opening ceremony of the academic conference.

    The meeting conducted in-depth exchanges on the three issues of the Korean Peninsula situation, the regional peace mechanism, and the Northeast Asian regional economic cooperation. The current Korean Peninsula issue, the influence of major power competition on the regional situation, the relationship of North and South of the Korean Peninsula, the construction of the Northeast Asian economic corridor, and the China-South Korea+X cooperation path have been fully and deeply discussed. The scholars mutually believed that the current relaxation of the Korean Peninsula was hard-won and was facing new important milestones. All parties concerned should work together to promote peace and common prosperity of the region.

    During the meeting, Director of the Northeast Asian Research Center, Senior Professor Wang Shengjin, held talks with President Lin Gangze. The two sides spoke highly of the continuous and in-depth exchanges and cooperation over the past 15 years and reached broad consensus on further promoting mutual research and higher-level cooperation programs.
